Odour

Odour has the potential to give rise to disamenity issues should proposed residential development be located next to odorous sources or vice versa. It is therefore often required to be considered during the planning application stage and NJD Environmental Associates have the experience of undertaking such assessments.

Odour Impact Assessments

NJD Environmental Associates undertake odour impact assessments for proposed residential developments located near to existing sources of odour, i.e. sewage treatment works, farms and waste sites.

We can also consider proposed development with the potential to give rise to emissions of odour and an assessment of the risk of the impact at existing sensitive receptors.

Odour impact is determined by the FIDO factors (Frequency, Intensity, Duration and Offensiveness) and when considered alongside receptor sensitivity, the magnitude of the odour effect can be determined.

Sensory Testing

Odour impact assessments are undertaken in accordance with the IAQM "Guidance on the Assessment of Odour for Planning" which contains methodology for undertaking sensory testing.

Our consultants at NJD Environmental Associates  have undertaken odour acuity testing to determine their sensitivity to odours in accordance with BS EN 13725:2003, ensuring that observations made during field sensory testing, undertaken as part of the assessment process, are appropriate.

Dispersion Modelling

Our consultants at NJD Environmental Associates are trained in the use of dispersion modelling software to predict odour concentrations from proposed and existing sources. This is a useful tool during the planning application stage to determine the potential odour effect.

Odour Management Plans

Environmental permits may require that an Odour Management Plan is implemented to prevent odour pollution or minimise odour when prevention is not practicable.

NJD Environmental Associates can prepare site-specific plans with documented control measures and procedures, including complaints handling and monitoring if necessary.
