Lighting Amenity Assessments

Light nuisance is a common problem and can intrude on the residential amenity in both urban and rural settings, causing stress and anxiety for people affected.

Light Surveys and Assessments

NJD Environmental Associates provides lighting amenity assessments to support planning applications and development projects throughout the UK.

Artificial lighting can have the potential to affect residential and environmental amenity, particularly where sensitive development is proposed close to existing sources of illumination such as commercial and industrial premises, sports facilities, car parks and highways.

Our consultants undertake baseline lighting surveys to establish existing conditions, including measurement of illuminance levels (lux) at proposed development sites and sensitive receptor locations. The results are reviewed in the context of the surrounding environment and relevant guidance to determine whether existing lighting conditions are likely to give rise to amenity issues.

Our assessments are focused on measured existing lighting conditions and the potential implications for amenity. Where detailed prediction, lighting design or modelling of a proposed lighting installation is required, this would normally be undertaken by a specialist lighting designer.

We can also undertake measurements of existing lighting levels where these are required to inform ecological assessment, with the results provided to the project ecologist for consideration.
